<1> It’s Here! International Symposium                     by Satoko Kono, President

Thank you very much for your support for ARUN.

ARUN Social Investment International Symposium is only a few days away!

Thank you for many of you who registered already. We have been receiving exciting presentation materials from our guests and we are looking forward to welcoming you all.

Last Saturday, we held a meeting to study the three social investment organizations that we invited as guests. One thing that all the three organizations share is that they support social enterprises which strive to solve various problems of development countries by investments, not by charitable donations. Looking closely, however, each organization is unique in its organizational structure, investment method and fund acquisition. Acumen Fund pulls funds through donations for long-term investments. Aavishkaar aims to produce financial return from investments in India. Oikocredit has been maintaining dividend yields of approximately 2% annum for 35 years. How does different cultural backgrounds influence each funds? How are the investments impacting the society? And how are the investors receiving returns? Learning from the real examples from around the world, we would like to explore the form of social investment that is suited to Japanese context.

Our speakers are not only from the investment organizations but also from the social enterprises that ARUN invests. Frangipani manages boutique hotels in the capital Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, where Angkor Wat is the popular tourist attraction. Sahakreas CEDAC leads rice industry, aiming for the cooperation and development of small-scale farmers. They will share their viewpoints on the roles of social enterprises play in Cambodia.

Presentations and discussions of the symposium are mainly in English, but we will provide simultaneous translators for both days. We are looking forward to your participation, Saturday October 6th and Sunday, October 7th, at The Nihon Zaidan Building in Toranomon, Tokyo!

* ARUN is a Limited Liability Company with 82 investors (individual and corporate). We support social enterprises in Cambodia through investments, aim to build global social investment platform that originates in Japan.

<2> ARUN will announce its unique Social Performance Indicator at the Symposium.

The 2nd day of the Symposium, from 4 pm, is a presentation on ARUN’s  Social Performance Indicator.  Based on our internal debates at ARUN on how to evaluate social performances of the businesses, we invite you to the further discussions. Here we give you a summary of ARUN’s policy on investment for social performance. ARUN’s evaluation method of the businesses is based on following three points:

1. Evaluation of Business Model and Operation (Leadership of the entrepreneur, Originality, Foresight)

2. Social Impact Evaluation (Employment, Contribution to local community, Environmental awareness)

3. Financial Evaluation (Profitability, Stability, Growth, Reliability)
