ARUN Newsletter No. 32 January 2014

<1> Foreword

Thank you for your continual support for ARUN.
ARUN is a Limited Liability Company with 98 investors (private and incorporated).
We aim to support social enterprises in developing countries through investments, while building a social investment platform originating in Japan.
This year, ARUN celebrates its 5th year anniversary. We sincerely thank all of you who have been supporting and guiding us, and would like to keep running at our best for the New Year.
Here are our goals for this year, which we share with ARUN partners.

(1) Put into practice social investment together: ARUN’s strength comes from the practice of investments in developing countries, a practice that has no precedent in Japan. Through ARUN’s investment, together we implement the practice.

(2) Let’s create a world trend: Social investment is becoming a world trend. ARUN creates the trend with works in the investment field and analysis of our experiences, instead of simply following the trend.

(3) Let’s grow together: The experience of learning from developing countries’ markets and business trends through social investment, and the experience of working together with entrepreneurs for finding answers contribute to the growth of people who understand the real current of developing countries, and can perform on a global stage.  We are calling for individuals and corporations who will participate in the activities of ARUN.

It is our hope to create a new flow of money and a new financial system through trial and error in the area of social investment. Our newsletter is packed with information; popular Partner’s essay from Marawi, series on social evaluation, and book reviews of titles to understand social investment.

ARUN’s 4th Anniversary Symposium invites Mr. Masataka Uo of Japan Fundraising and Mr. Daisuke Iwase of Lifenet Life Insurance Company. We will discuss our future, and what steps we need to take now. The Symposium is held on Tuesday, January 21st at 7 pm in Tokyo.

We are looking forward to working together this year!

<2> Series : Social Evaluation

What does “success” mean in social investment and impact investment? – Types of Social Evaluation Methods in the World

ARUN was established in 2009 to practice social investment. From the time of its establishment, ARUN has supported entrepreneurs in developing countries and social businesses in the form of investment, recognizing the importance of both business feasibility and social awareness.

With increased interests in social investment and diverse players, the necessity for social monitoring and evaluation methods are also increasing. For the second part of the series, I will introduce different types of social evaluation methods that are available worldwide.

First, we need to go back to the original question; why do we need evaluation methods? In order to answer the question, let’s review what social investment is.

<3> Partner’s Essay

Do You Know Malawi? (Takeshi Tomiya, ARUN Partner)

I have been staying in the Republic of Malawi in southern Africa since December 2012.
Currently, I am involved in ODA (Official Development Assistance) , but thanks to ARUN, I have gotten an important opportunity to see the developing country as a potential investment, not only as a target for assistance.  In the world of developmental assistance, Malawi is viewed as “the poorest, landlocked African country that depends on agriculture,” but staying here for a year, I can see both Malawi’s advantages and problems from the point of view of social investment.

<4> [New] Book Review: Social Investment Explained!

Shunichi Kozasa, ARUN Partner

The original English title: “To Sell Is Human” is so much better than the Japanese title. This is the latest translated work of Daniel H. Pink, who is said to have been predicting the future.
