Thank you for your continual support for ARUN.
ARUN is a Limited Liability Company with 93 investors (private and incorporated).
We aim to support social enterprises in developing countries through investments,
while building a social investment platform originating in Japan.

In August, I visited India again. The purpose of this visit was to discover social entrepreneurs who are active in Western Bengal. Among them, one particular entrepreneur impressed me. He is a social entrepreneur who uses Information Technology for the improvement of the rural medical services. He has worked in the west coast of the United States and was a successful IT Engineer for IBM and Oracle. He decided to change his course, however, when his father, whom he respects, fell ill and was misdiagnosed. Wanting to change the rural medical services in India, he opened three clinics in the rural area, a 3-4 hour drive from the capital Kolkata.

He has developed a software to build a system that can be used in rural India where the communication technology is inefficient, a system that the clinics and the hospitals can use to share medical information and ask for second opinions. In the next three years, he wants to open around 50 clinics and in the future, he wants to expand the service not only within the West Bengal area but all over India and even overseas. His dream is big, but his strong motivation and his sincere character seem to move people around him; he is surrounded by  Indian staff members who are able and charming.

For example, a woman from Delhi who earned an MBA from one of the top universities in India chose this work, instead of accepting job offers from major corporations. A doctor came to work after working as an air force doctor and sub-director of an international medical organization. Another staff member went to England to study management in graduate school, and obtained experience in the medical field so he can work for this enterprise.

It was impressive that those people who aspired to obtain good careers all expressed that the start up business is the place where they can truly test their potential. On this trip, I also enjoyed tasty Bengal dishes, but I will tell you about them next time.

We opened our recruitment for a part-time job in the Tokyo office. We had 21 applicants and decided to hire two. We sincerely appreciate all who applied, who are motivated and with excellent qualities; both students and people with careers, not only from Japan but internationally from Bangladesh, Mexico and Bulgaria.

The Second Social Investment International Symposium (October 12th and 13th in Tokyo) will soon be opening. We are supported again by the Japan Foundation and will invite attractive guests from all over the world. Please see the details below, and please join!

1.Report from ARUN Business Competition                        by Satoko Mouri

2.Two Things That Are Necessary; Impressions from The Study Tour              by Masayuki Ito

1.Report from the Business Competition

From August 4th to the 10th, the Third Social Business Competition was held at CJCC (Cambodia Japan Cooperation Center) in Phnom Penh. The competition is held in order to encourage social entrepreneurs who can solve social problems through business, with 7 college students from Cambodia, 3 from Myanmar, 10 from Japan; total of 20.  The twenty students were divided into 5 teams, and each team worked on a business plan by visiting the area and consulting specialists.

2. Two Things That Are Necessary; Impressions From The Study Tour

In this study tour, I visited the following 6 businesses and cooperatives: 1. Production of handmade human hair extensions, 2. Hotel owned by local capital, 3. Large-scale cooperative for organic rice production, 4. Small-scale cooperative for organic rice production, 5. Installation of simple solar panel for home generator for the areas without electricity, 6. Small-scale production of health plant powder.

Among these, except for the American female entrepreneur of 1, all Cambodian entrepreneurs seem to share the same motivation, which is to ride the wave of economic development in the market mechanism of each field and improve economically through the business activities.

<4> Afterward

In Cambodia, it is rainy season now. It is not the rainy season like Japan, but a season that has strong rain at a certain time of the day every day. Sometimes you can see the black rain clouds in the distance.

I hear news of heavy rain falls in various areas of Japan. My sincere condolences to those who were affected, and I remind myself to be prepared for the sudden rainstorms.
