Thank you for your continual support for ARUN.

ARUN is a Limited Liability Company with 93 investors (private and incorporated).

We aim to support social enterprises in developing countries through investments,

while building a social investment platform originating in Japan.

I will share a little more about our new Tokyo office. There are three major routes to reach our office.

The first is to travel from Tokyo Station Yaesu South Exit. On this route, I meet people standing in lines to get on the long distance buses and imagine their destinations, and watch hustle and bustle of Tokyo’s main front. The route from the subway Ginza Line Kyobashi Station feels good to walk through. It’s a wide and open street with new office buildings. My favorite route, however, is the walk from the direction of Ginza to the office. Walking in the back of the Printemps Ginza building to Namiki Dori street, I encounter unique stores such as a bakery that sells their original recipe, asparagus cookies, a place for refreshing ginger ale, and casual European style bistro where you can order curry for 500 yen. Such stores give me the feeling that the local people really care about this town. If you have never been to our office, please try different routes and visit us!

Starting at our new office location, we publicly recruited our staff. We had 11 enthusiastic responses, and after very difficult decision making among the excellent talents, we made our selection. We had applicants not only from Tokyo, but from the Kansai area and the United States.

We sincerely appreciate your interest. Thank you very much for those who applied, promoted and assisted our recruitment. We are hoping to introduce our new staff organization in next month’s newsletter. Stay tuned!

This week, we are holding the Social Business Competition with students from Cambodia, Myanmar, and Japan. The final presentation and the award ceremony will be held on August 10th in Phnom Penh at the Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center (CJCC).  If you are in Cambodia, please come to listen to the students’ enthusiastic presentations.

I wish everyone a good summer, and looking forward to seeing you in the Second International Symposium (October 12-13, Tokyo).

Accompanying ARUN Investment Proposal Field Research Tour                    Toshio Komachi ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

I accompanied ARUN’s Investment Proposal Field Research Tour in Cambodia. Originally, I was vaguely thinking that I might go to the ARUN event in August. When I was attending the investment committee meeting, I learned that the director was going in July, so I changed my plan to go with her. Originally I was going to visit Phnom Penh, but decided to visit Siem Reap and Hanoi, Vietnam as well, for a total of 12 days.

<3>Investment Now                                                             Investment Team

ARUN members meet every weekend to confirm activities of the existing investees and discuss prospective investees. Here is the newest development of one of our investees.

One of the existing investees, Frangipani, is a company that operates 5 hotels in Phnom Penh.

ARUN has provided capital for their fourth hotel, Frangipani Royal Palace and has been monitoring it until the maturity date of the loan in October 2014.  Frangipani offers services with hospitality and unique architectural space, as well as social activities such as employment of minorities and support for orphanages. Recently, they established partnership with a tourism agent in Thailand and are having increased use from Thailand.

<5> Afterward

As a part of social investment research, our members have visited India and I had an opportunity to listen to their report. There are so many budding businesses that respond to the wide needs of all parts of India. How do we define “social” in such a context? It made me think of the meaning of the very existence of an enterprise.
